Bondurant: Open Country, New Homes
Tree Service in Bondurant usually means young trees on open ground. The east Polk County town grew from 3,860 people in 2010 to 7,365 in 2020, a jump of about 91%, with a 2024 estimate around 9,465. Census QuickFacts puts the owner-occupied rate at 91.0%, the highest of the communities we serve, and only 6.7% of residents are 65 or older. That is a lot of families in newer houses with trees that were planted in the last decade or two.
Bondurant was founded in 1884 and named for Alexander C. Bondurant, the area's first settler, who arrived in 1857. The Chicago Great Western Railway built a station here in 1892, and the town incorporated in 1897. The old blocks near the original town still have some larger trees; most of the rest is newer.
July 19, 2018
At about 2:51 p.m., an EF2 tornado with winds estimated at 115 mph entered western Bondurant and lifted most of the second floor off a house. It weakened to EF0 as it crossed east and then died out in a field after 2.99 miles. A second EF2 ran 3.8 miles through farmland north of town at the same time and hit a farmstead with EF2-level tree damage. Storm reports from town listed trees down, a roof off and a car blown over.
Two years later, during the August 10, 2020 derecho, Bondurant reported numerous trees and power lines down around 11 a.m.
Why open ground matters
With fields on several sides, wind reaches Bondurant yards at nearly full speed. Young trees with tight forks and long unbranched leaders are the ones that split. Structural pruning in the first 10 to 15 years after planting does the most good: one dominant leader, well-spaced limbs, and nothing heavy reaching over the roof. It is a small cost compared with removing a split tree later.
Other common Bondurant jobs
- Removing trees damaged in past storms that never recovered
- Taking out declining ash
- Thinning windbreak rows on larger lots
- Pruning trees away from houses and fences
- Grinding stumps so new trees or lawn can go in
Ash trees and the 2018 cleanup
Many ash trees in Bondurant were planted in the same era as the subdivisions around them. Some were damaged in the 2018 tornado or the 2020 derecho and have been declining since. An ash infested by emerald ash borer shows thinning in the upper crown, woodpecker damage that strips the outer bark and small D-shaped holes. Because dead ash gets brittle quickly, removing it while the wood is still sound is safer and often cheaper than waiting.
Wood, chips and cleanup
On every estimate, we spell out what happens to the wood and brush: chipped and hauled, chips left for mulch, or logs cut to length. If you have a fire pit or wood stove, let us know; you might want to keep some of it.

Bondurant Questions
Will my young Bondurant tree split in a storm?
Trees with two equal leaders or tight V-shaped forks are at the highest risk. Structural pruning while the tree is young reduces that risk a lot.
Do you thin windbreaks on acreages near Bondurant?
Yes. We remove dead and crowded trees from windbreak rows so the remaining trees stay healthy and the windbreak keeps working.
Can you grind stumps from old storm-damaged trees?
Yes. Old stumps can be ground below grade and the area prepared for new plantings or sod.
Is there tree service near me in Bondurant for an emergency?
If a tree is on your house or blocking your driveway, call (515) 762-6977 and leave the details. Stay clear of any downed lines and report them to the utility first.
Is it worth pruning a tree that's only ten years old?
Yes. This is the cheapest and most effective time to shape it. A few cuts now can prevent a split trunk in a storm 15 years from now.
