Dallas Center: Arboretum Town on the Prairie
Tree Service in Dallas Center has a high bar to meet. The Brenton Arboretum, just outside town, covers about 140 acres and holds more than 2,600 trees and shrubs, built around a collection of 175 native Iowa trees and shrubs plus other species that grow well in central Iowa. Its first trees were planted in 1997. It is a living catalog of what grows well here, and a good place to see what a well-formed mature tree should look like.
Dallas Center started in 1869 when the railroad came through and incorporated on March 22, 1880. It was named for U.S. Vice President George M. Dallas. The town sits about 20 miles west-northwest of Des Moines and nine miles west of Grimes, and it had 1,901 residents in the 2020 Census.
High, open ground
At about 1,050 feet, Dallas Center is one of the higher towns in the metro, with open farm country around it. Wind reaches town with little interruption. On April 16, 2024, an EF0 tornado began about 2.6 miles west-northwest of Dallas Center and tracked nearly 7 miles. Back on June 7, 2009, a brief EF0 tornado with 75 mph winds touched down about 3 miles south of town after the same storm caused widespread tree damage in Adel.
Parks and trails
Mound Park sits on the west end of town and Memorial Park on the east. Since 2009, Dallas Center has been a trailhead on the 33.1-mile north loop of the Raccoon River Valley Trail, at 14th and Walnut. Lines of trees along the trail corridor and in the parks frame the town.
Common Dallas Center tree work
- Deadwood and crown cleaning on old shade trees
- Thinning trees on exposed lots to reduce wind loading
- Removing declining ash and storm-damaged trees
- Windbreak thinning on acreages
- Stump grinding
Choosing replacement trees
When an old tree comes down, many owners ask what to plant in its place. A walk through the Brenton Arboretum is a good way to see mature examples of trees that do well here. Diversity matters: neighborhoods that relied heavily on elm and later on ash lost much of their canopy when Dutch elm disease and emerald ash borer arrived. Mixing species protects against the next pest.
Wood and cleanup
All estimates spell out what happens to the wood and brush. Choices include chipping and hauling, leaving chips for mulch, or cutting logs to firewood length. We leave the site raked and cleaned up.
Young trees in newer homes
Not every tree in Dallas Center is old. Newer homes on the edge of town come with young trees that need structural pruning, mulch rings kept off the trunk and stakes removed after the first year. A little care at this stage keeps them from becoming problem trees later.

Dallas Center Questions
What trees grow well in Dallas Center?
The Brenton Arboretum is a good place to see trees that thrive in central Iowa. A mix of species is better than planting many of one kind, a lesson Iowa learned from Dutch elm disease and emerald ash borer.
Do you thin windbreaks on farms near Dallas Center?
Yes. Removing dead and crowded trees from old windbreaks helps the rest stay healthy.
Can you remove a storm-damaged tree from my yard?
Yes. Damaged trees are taken down in a controlled way, starting with the parts under the most tension.
How long does a typical removal take in Dallas Center?
A medium-sized yard tree with good access can often be removed and cleaned up in a few hours. Large trees close to buildings take longer, usually most of a day.
Do you prune ornamental trees as well as big shade trees?
Yes. Crabapples, redbuds and other small ornamentals benefit from light pruning to remove crossing branches, suckers and deadwood, usually in late winter.
Do you work in Grimes and Adel too?
Yes. We cover Dallas Center, Grimes, Adel and the rest of the metro.
