Mitchellville and Its Trees
Tree Service in Mitchellville covers a small town with a long history. Thomas Mitchell, described as the first white settler in Polk County, founded Mitchellville in 1856, and it incorporated on September 30, 1875. The town straddles the Polk and Jasper county line and had 2,485 residents in the 2020 Census on about 2.5 square miles. Mitchell's farm was later bought by Polk County and became Thomas Mitchell Park.
Mitchellville is the kind of town where big old trees line the original blocks, and most homeowners have at least one tree that is older than anyone living in the house. That brings the usual needs of mature trees: deadwood removal, clearance from roofs and wires, and eventually removal.
East of the metro, in the wind
Mitchellville sits at about 955 feet, with open farmland on most sides. On June 25, 2024, a brief tornado touched down about 1.1 miles west-southwest of town. During the August 10, 2020 derecho, nearby stations recorded gusts of 85 mph near Elkhart and storm reports from Bondurant listed numerous trees and lines down. Open ground lets wind build up speed before it reaches town.
Questions we hear in Mitchellville
Is my old maple safe? Look for dead branches in the top, cracks at forks, cavities and fungus on the trunk. Any of those is worth a professional look.
Can I just top it to make it smaller? Topping causes weak regrowth and decay. Reduction cuts back to side branches are the right way to lower a tree.
What about my windbreak? Old windbreaks on acreages often have dead and dying trees. Thinning them out helps the remaining trees and keeps the windbreak doing its job.
Our work here
- Pruning mature shade trees
- Removing dead, damaged and declining trees
- Clearing fence lines and thinning windbreaks
- Stump grinding
- Storm cleanup
Old trees and new lines
Mature trees in old towns often grew up before the overhead service lines they now surround. If branches are touching a power line, leave that part to the utility's line-clearance crews; once it is safe, we can prune the rest of the tree. For service drops to the house, we can usually prune around them carefully.
A word on ash
Many Iowa towns planted ash trees for decades. Emerald ash borer larvae feed in serpentine galleries beneath the bark, and adults exit through small D-shaped holes. Green ash is among the species it prefers. If you have an ash in your yard in Mitchellville, look for a thinning upper crown and bark stripped by woodpeckers. An early look lets you choose between treatment and removal on your terms.
Brush and cleanup
Every estimate says what happens to the wood and brush. Options typically include chipping and hauling away, leaving chips for mulch, or cutting logs to firewood length. You choose, and it's in writing before we start.
When to call
The best time to have a mature Mitchellville tree looked at is before something goes wrong: late winter, when the leaves are off and the branch structure is easy to read. Problems found then can be fixed before spring storms.

Mitchellville Questions
Do you work on both the Polk and Jasper County sides of Mitchellville?
Yes. We work throughout town and on nearby acreages in both counties.
How do I know if a big old tree should come down?
If it has major decay in the trunk, a large dead section of crown, or a lean that is getting worse, removal is often the safer option. We will explain what we see.
Do you grind stumps left from old removals?
Yes. Old stumps can be ground down and the area cleaned up for lawn or new planting.
Can you trim trees near the power line to my house?
Service lines running to the house can usually be pruned around carefully. For the main lines along the street, the utility needs to handle the clearance first.
Do you work on Thomas Mitchell Park or other public land?
Public parks are maintained by their owners. We work on private property in and around Mitchellville.
