Cumming and the Storms That Pass Through
Tree Service in Cumming covers a small town in northwest Warren County that has been in the path of strong storms. The 2020 Census counted 436 residents on about 2.5 square miles, making Cumming one of the smallest incorporated suburbs in the Des Moines area. It sits at about 981 feet with farmland and acreages all around.
June 22, 2007
On that afternoon, a tornado touched down about 2 miles northwest of Cumming near Interstate 35 around 4:35 p.m. It moved southeast and passed along the southern edge of Cumming, causing EF1 damage to farm buildings on the south side of town, before continuing on an intermittent track to southern Norwalk. The NWS rated it EF2 overall, with peak winds near 125 mph, on a path of 12 to 14 miles.
Great Western Trail
The Great Western Trail passes through Cumming. Trail corridors in this part of Warren County tend to be lined with mixed trees and brush. Properties next to the trail often have trees along the property line that deserve attention: dead trees, leaning trees, and branches reaching over yards and outbuildings.
Acreages around town
Most properties near Cumming have more room than city lots, and that brings different jobs:
- Thinning or removing old windbreak trees
- Clearing fence lines and pasture edges
- Removing dead trees near homes, sheds and lanes
- Pruning yard trees on open ground for wind
- Grinding stumps after removals
Storm prep for small-town lots
Cumming's storm record makes a simple pre-season walk-around worth doing. Look for dead branches in the upper crown, cracks where large limbs join the trunk, mushrooms or soft wood at the base, and trees that have started to lean toward the house or a building. Those are the trees most likely to fail in the next strong wind. A professional inspection can confirm what's sound and what isn't.
Utility lines in the country
Rural properties often have overhead lines running along roads and lanes. Trees growing into those lines are the utility's to clear; don't try to prune near them yourself. We can handle the rest of the tree once the line is clear.
Wood and brush
On rural jobs there is often room to leave logs for firewood or let chips stay on site. Let us know what you'd like; it goes into the written estimate.
In-town lots
Inside Cumming itself, yards are a mix of older homes with established trees and newer houses with young plantings. Older trees need clearance from roofs and wires and deadwood removal; young ones need light structural pruning every few years so they grow a single strong leader.
