Norwalk Knows What Wind Does to Trees

Tree Service in Norwalk has a storm story behind it. On June 22, 2007, two tornadoes crossed the city within minutes of each other. The first, rated EF2 with winds estimated at 125 mph, came from near Cumming, looped through southern Norwalk and badly damaged a home on the southeast side. The second, an EF1, started near the Legacy Golf Course north of town and cut through Norwalk past the fire station. The NWS rated tree damage across town EF0 to EF1, with winds of 88 to 107 mph.

Fifteen years later, on March 5, 2022, the EF4 tornado that began near Winterset caused significant damage on the southeast side of Norwalk on its 70.6-mile track. Many Norwalk homeowners have now cleaned up after two major storms, and trees damaged in 2022 are still sorting themselves out.

What we look for in a storm-tested Norwalk tree: cracks at the main fork, bark peeled away in long strips, a crown that is missing one side, dead branches that were broken but never fell, and new decay at old wounds. Some trees recover with corrective pruning. Others are better removed on your schedule rather than the next storm's.

Rain, too. On June 9-10, 2011, more than 9 inches of rain fell on Norwalk in 24 hours, described as an unofficial record for an Iowa town. Saturated soil and heavy crowns are a bad combination, and many root-plate failures happen after a wet week rather than during the worst wind.

A city that grew fast. Norwalk started near the North River in the 1840s, was briefly known as Pyra, and covered just one square mile when it incorporated in 1900. By 2020 it had 12,799 people and about 11.55 square miles of land, with a 2025 estimate passing 15,000. Lake Colchester, a man-made lake in the Lakewood development started in 1965, and neighborhoods around Echo Valley, The Legacy and Warrior Run golf courses add a lot of mature and semi-mature trees on open, windy ground.

Who calls us. About 82.5% of Norwalk homes are owner-occupied, the highest rate among the larger suburbs we serve. Owners here tend to invest in their trees. Common jobs include crown cleaning, reduction of heavy limbs over roofs, removal of trees that never recovered from storm damage, and stump grinding so lawns can be repaired.

Saving what can be saved. Not every damaged tree needs to come down. Corrective pruning removes broken stubs back to sound wood, selects new leaders where tops were lost, and thins the dense sprouts that come in after a storm. Done over two or three visits, it can turn a battered tree into a sound one. The honest answer depends on the trunk: a cracked or decayed main stem changes the math.

Norwalk Questions

My Norwalk tree lost half its crown in 2022. Can it come back?

Some species, like oaks and maples with sound trunks, can rebuild a crown over several years with corrective pruning. If the trunk is cracked or decay has set in, removal is usually wiser. We can tell you which case you have.

Do trees on golf-course lots need special care?

They are more exposed to wind since there is open ground on at least one side. Thinning and reducing long limbs on the exposed side helps.

Is there tree removal near me in Norwalk for a tree over the house?

Yes. Trees over structures are removed in sections with ropes and rigging so pieces are lowered, not dropped.

Do you also work in Cumming and rural Warren County near Norwalk?

Yes. We work in Cumming and the surrounding area as well.

Should I have trees inspected before tornado season?

Late winter or early spring, before leaves come out, is a good time. Cracks, decay and weak forks are easiest to see then, and any pruning can be done before spring storms.
